The Grand Teton Mall in Idaho Falls is a “gun‑free” zone, or at least that’s what they want you to believe.

Nearly every mall in America has a similar policy, and criminals have been ignoring these signs for as long as malls have existed. The Grand Teton Mall posts a sign at at least one entrance, and its website lists a Code of Conduct that includes the line:

“No firearms or illegal weapons.”

The wording is almost laughable. If the mall truly meant what it says, why not simply write “No Weapons”? That would cover everything, legal or “illegal.” And interestingly, the policy doesn’t even include an exemption for law enforcement.

Most gun owners will point out that if you carry concealed, then no one knows the better, and they’re right. Idaho law does not make it a crime to enter a store or mall that posts an anti‑gun sign. However, if mall staff notice you’re carrying a gun and ask you to leave, refusing could result in a trespass charge. That’s the mechanism these “gun‑free” zones rely on.

The Grand Teton Mall can choose whatever policy it wants, and gun owners can choose whether to support it. That’s exactly why the Idaho Second Amendment Alliance maintains the Idaho Anti‑Gun Accountability Center, so gun owners can make informed decisions about where they spend their money.
