Costco is one of the most popular big‑box stores in America, but it’s also one of the places where gun owners are technically not supposed to carry.

Because Costco requires a membership to shop, gun owners agree to the company’s rules when they sign up. And buried in Costco’s online membership agreement is a clear anti‑gun policy: firearms are not allowed in the warehouse unless you’re law enforcement.

The policy states (under General Guidelines):

“Costco policy prohibits firearms and other weapons to be brought into the warehouse, except in the case of authorized law‑enforcement officers.”

Most gun owners will tell you they conceal carry in Costco without issue. But attempts to open carry usually end the same way: a manager asking the customer to leave or to lock their firearm in their vehicle. The policy may be misguided, but it is enforced.

Costco has the right to set its own rules for its members. Gun owners have the right to spend their money somewhere else. That’s how freedom works.
