While Democrats are often associated with supporting gun‑control measures, the Idaho Second Amendment Alliance says some Republicans also oppose key firearm reforms, pointing specifically to State Senator Jim Guthrie (R‑Inkom).

Guthrie has long been viewed by the ISAA as a major obstacle to expanding gun rights in Idaho. Although he has supported certain pro‑gun bills, he also serves as Chairman of the Senate State Affairs Committee, a role that gives him significant influence over which proposals receive hearings.

Our own personal experience is that Guthrie has blocked several major firearm‑related reforms in recent years, including legislation to allow armed school staff and bills dealing with Stand‑Your‑Ground immunity and reimbursement.

A previous “school carry” bill introduced by Guthrie drew support from gun‑control advocates. ISAA leaders argue that such backing signaled the bill was not aligned with our vision of expanding gun rights.

In past years, Guthrie has been willing to meet with, and appears receptive to, positions held by Moms Demand Action, a national gun‑control organization. Why would an Idaho Republican consider input from an organization that opposes many firearm‑rights expansions?

The ISAA maintains that Idaho should be advancing what it views as the strongest firearm‑rights legislation in the country. Because of Guthrie’s past actions, we have added him to the Idaho Anti‑Gun Accountability Center.
