Mountain America Center in Idaho Falls – “No Guns Allowed”

The Mountain America Center in Idaho Falls is an explicitly gun‑free zone. The MAC bans firearms at all events, unlike some venues that only impose restrictions during specific shows. Every attendee goes through a metal detector, and anyone who sets it off may be wanded by security.

Concerts, rodeos, and Idaho Falls Spud Kings hockey games all take place inside the Center, meaning thousands of Idahoans are forced to disarm if they want to attend.

Because the building is owned by the Idaho Falls Auditorium District and funded by taxpayers, many gun owners understandably question whether the public should retain its right to self‑defense inside the facility. Under normal circumstances, public property cannot be turned into a gun‑free zone.

However, the MAC is operated by a private company, Centennial Management Group, based out of Utah. Under the Idaho Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling, when a city or district hands operational control of public property to a private entity, the Court treats that property as “private” for the duration of the lease. As a result, the operator can impose firearm bans even though the government itself could not.

Gun owners still have a choice. If they don’t want to be disarmed in a so‑called “gun‑free zone,” they can take their dollars to other venues that respect their rights.
