The Convention of States movement has been around in Idaho for years.
Last year was the first year that the movement gained real momentum in the Idaho legislature. This year, a COS resolution, House Concurrent Resolution 10, or HCR 10, is being prepared for a vote on the House floor.
With HCR 10 set for a vote in Idaho, the ISAA has made our position clear on this issue: We are opposed.
(You can watch a video breakdown of our opposition by clicking here or watch it at the end of this article.)
First, we want to be clear that there are good people on both sides of this issue. I have friends who support a COS and friends who are opposed to it.
The ISAA’s position on this issue has not changed from our position last year: We are opposed to a COS based on trust.
We do NOT trust Congress to do it the right way, whichever that is, since there is a lot of disagreement on how a COS will go.
We do NOT trust that the delegates or Congress will operate it correctly. These people are corrupt now and we are going to trust them to not be corrupt when a COS happens?
We do NOT trust the judicial system, and most of you don’t either. Why would I trust that judges reviewing the legal challenges that come up during a COS (and there will be many of them) will side with the people during this time? They are corrupt now, and many of them are liberal. What do you think their interpretation of the “rules” and “sideboards” will be?
We do NOT trust the media to report on anything from a COS accurately. If something anti-gun comes out of the COS, they will lie and cheat their way to ratification if they have to.
We do NOT trust that the changes will be followed. We do not follow the Constitution now, and we are hoping that all these people and systems we do not trust now will magically be trusted after a COS?
On top of all of that, is a very real concern about changes to the 2nd Amendment. Heck, I don’t disagree that we couldn’t make it even more clear, because there are a ton of infringements right now. However, the risk is too great.
California’s communist Governor, Gavin Newsom, has already made it clear he is coming for the 2nd Amendment if there is a COS.
That is a short summary of our primary reason for opposing the COS: It’s a great tool that cannot be trusted to be used properly by the people who will do the convention.
