Two Idaho Republicans Vote Against Public Carry of Firearms

Two Idaho Republicans have voted against HB 376, sponsored by Rep. Dale Hawkins (R-Fernwood), a bill used to expand public carry that will begin restoring Idaho’s firearm preemption law.

Unsurprisingly, the Democrats voted against HB 376 because they’re Democrats. There probably isn’t a pro-gun bill we could introduce that would be acceptable to the Democrat Party, even in Idaho.

However, two Republican lawmakers joined Democrats in voting against a pro-2nd Amendment bill.

Representative Rick Cheatum (R—Pocatello) and Representative Mark Sauter (R—Sandpoint) decided that protecting the right to public carry was unnecessary.

The Idaho legislature has a giant task ahead of it. A few years ago, the Idaho Supreme Court essentially negated the firearm preemption law (18-3302j), so the entire thing has to be re-tooled and redone.

It doesn’t take much for a city to get around public carry completely, but just “leasing” or “renting” property to private organizations that can ban firearms on public grounds. The liberal cities are taking advantage of the Idaho Supreme Court’s opinion, and you can bet it’ll get worse in the coming years unless the legislature steps in.

Protecting the right to carry in public is critical in ensuring that Idahoans have a right to defend themselves.

The Idaho Second Alliance will educate the constituents in these two Republican lawmakers’ districts. Citizens have a right to know when their lawmakers have violated their promise to protect the right to keep and bear arms.

As a resident of Sauter’s district I fully disagree. There was a smear campaign against the incumbent by the Democrats in our area, and I bet they declared themselves a Republican on primary to put both Woodward and Sauter in.

I will be calling both of these men. It is unacceptable for a supposed pro 2 amendment Representative to vote against the right to bear arms…

No legislation should come close or even imply that it is constitutional to control lawful American’s 2nd Amendment right! Vote these individuals out of office at the first opportunity.

Would it be helpful to post post these two Rhinos on social media? That would let those who voted them know how they really stand on progun issues.

Does this surprise you? Pocatello and Sandpoint “Republicans”? Its on those who voted them in to get them out and find someone who’s truly conservative and understands how to vote WITH their community instead of against them.

Chink in the armor…they claim to be republicans but are democrats cloaked in wolves costumes! Prolly hanging out with Jay Inslee 🖕🏾💥

My wife and I retired and escaped a tyrannically run and anti 2A state (Washington) to be closer to family here. We loved the freedom and pro gun rights we have here. I haven’t delved very deeply into Idaho politics, but maybe now it’s time to. This news is both unsettling and unnerving.

Good for them!!! Maybe all Idahoans don’t want everybody in public places to be carrying guns. I’m sure they had a good reason for not expanding this so-called right.

Rinos for sure! They should be ashamed and saying they are Republicans, then voting like they did! Vote them out immediately and we will continue to fight for our Right to Bear Arms in our Great State of Idaho! 🇺🇸 USA.

In the area’s that these Senators represent, get with your county Republican Party and apply to be a leader in that vacancy. Then Write a letter censuring each of these Senators and letting them know that your County party will endorse their opponent in the next primary based on the censure. If you’re already a Precinct leader, you should already know how to do this.
